Nicaragua - Changing the Life of a Village 2010
El Porvenir means "the future" and this organization is helping give the rural people of Nicaragua a future that has been denied to them. The vision of El Porvenir is to see a Nicaragua in which rural people achieve a better quality of life, particularly through reduced disease, childhood mortalities, and burdens on women. "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord. "Plans not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a porvenir."
And it all begins with water
WHY NICARAGUA?

This country is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. 80% of Nicaraguans live on less than $2 a day. Lack of clean water and sanitation leads directly to the deaths of 1.8 million children each year - that is 5,000 children every day, dying simply because they do not have access to clean water and sanitary facilities. Girls and women spend an average of 2 hours every day walking to get water from dirty streams and river that they share with the animals. Consequently, education is denied to them, furthering imprisoning them in the vicious cycle of poverty.
We can change this for an entire village
Projects in a village follow a sequence. Beginning with the well, then latrines, a lavandero (washing and bathing station), reforestation, improved stoves that use less wood, then a health education workshop with workbooks for school children. Here is a breakdown of average costs.
